In the early 1980s, researchers began exploring how changes in natural light exposure could influence daily routines and overall well-being—especially during the darker months of the year.
During this time, Neal Owens, founder of The SunBox Company, became interested in the emerging research around bright light and its potential role in supporting a more balanced daily rhythm. Through his connection with researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health, he had the opportunity to experience one of the early experimental light units being studied.
After incorporating bright light into his own routine, Neal recognized the potential for a well-designed, reliable light source that could be used conveniently at home. At the time, these devices were not commercially available—research units were custom-built and limited to laboratory settings.
Determined to make high-quality lighting more accessible, Neal built his own light box using guidance from early research on brightness, safety, and usability.
When researchers saw his design, they recognized its practicality and durability. Neal went on to collaborate in refining light box designs that could be used more consistently outside of research environments.
As interest grew, individuals began seeking out similar lighting solutions for personal use—marking the beginning of what would become The SunBox Company.
Founded in 1985 and incorporated in 1987, the company was built on a commitment to thoughtful design, quality construction, and reliable performance.
Today, The SunBox Company is recognized for its long-standing experience in developing bright light products designed for everyday use.
