In the early 1980s, researchers began to better understand how seasonal changes in light exposure could influence patterns in sleep, energy, and daily mood. During darker months, some individuals reported shifts in routines such as increased sleep, lower energy, changes in appetite, and reduced motivation.
At the same time, researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) began exploring how bright light exposure might support daily rhythm regulation and overall well-being as part of structured clinical studies.
This early work helped lay the foundation for what is now commonly known as bright light-based wellness.
A Personal Discovery That Sparked Innovation
Around this time, Neal Owens—who would later found The SunBox Company—became interested in the emerging research on light and daily rhythms.
After learning about ongoing studies at NIMH, he sought to participate in early investigations into bright light exposure. While he was not eligible to formally join a clinical trial, he was given the opportunity to observe and use an early research light device in a home setting.
Early Observations in Daily Use
During a period of consistent daily use, Owens observed noticeable changes in his personal sense of energy, routine consistency, and overall well-being. These early experiences reflected what researchers were beginning to explore more broadly: the relationship between light exposure and daily biological rhythms.
At the time, these devices were not commercially available and were primarily used in research environments.
From Research to Real-World Application
Motivated by growing interest in the field, Owens began developing a version of a bright light device that aligned with research-based design principles related to brightness, safety, and usability.
This early work contributed to the development of one of the first commercially available bright light devices designed for everyday use.
As interest in light-based wellness grew, these devices began to be used in a variety of settings, including homes, clinics, and wellness environments, as part of daily routine support.
A Foundation for Modern Light-Based Wellness
Over time, The SunBox Company became one of the early companies in the field of bright light wellness devices, helping bring research-inspired designs into everyday environments.
Today, light-based wellness tools are widely used as part of routines focused on:
- Supporting consistent daily rhythms
- Creating structured morning habits
- Enhancing indoor lighting environments
- Promoting general well-being through light exposure practices
Continuing a Legacy of Light
More than three decades later, The SunBox Company continues to design bright light devices intended to support everyday wellness routines. Our focus remains on usability, consistency, and bringing bright light into daily life in a simple and accessible way.
